Developing and Implementing
Effective Evaluation Curriculum
for Capacity Building
NLM’s Office of Strategic Initiatives sought to promote a shared understanding of evaluation across the NLM and establish training and resources on evaluation and evidence-based decision making for NLM staff to build capacity for evaluation-related activities that align with the organization’s strategic goals.
Our Goal
Identify and address gaps in evaluation-related training for NLM staff to strengthen program evaluation capacity.
Our Path to Success
Ripple Effect assessed the NLM’s existing evaluation-related capabilities through a needs assessment, including conducting focus groups with NLM staff from various division, centers and offices, and an interview with NLM leadership. Based on the findings from the needs assessment, Ripple Effect designed a training curriculum to align with meeting the identified evaluation goals. This included two courses focused on the basics of evaluation design and application to practice, as well as evaluative thinking for strategic decision making, to build practical and relevant evaluation capacity at the NLM.
