Identifying Best Practices
for Expanding and Enhancing
the Research Participant Pool
for Genomics Research
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) sought to identify evidence– backed methods to strengthen its genomics research program by developing tools and best practice recommendations to engage more diverse research participants. This project worked towards a better understanding of how to effectively recruit and retain a variety of research participants essential for driving genomics research forward. Context is always important for determining which techniques might be effective for research participant recruitment and NHGRI sought expert support to identify, document existing best practices, and develop actionable recommendations that could be effectively implemented within the NIH research context.
Our Goal
Identify evidence-based best practices for recruiting and retaining a variety of participant populations in genomics research and offer actionable recommendations for diversifying the participants.
Our Path to Success
Ripple Effect conducted key informant interviews, literature reviews, and a landscape review to identify and document best practices in recruiting and retaining diverse research participants in genomics. Our team synthesized the findings into an actionable toolkit and supplemental detailed report designed to support the NHGRI research community. These evidence-based, comprehensive resources provided NIH staff with impactful strategies to support continued efforts in expanding and enhancing the genomic research participant pool.
