Tracking Trainee Outcomes
to Strengthen the
Genomics Workforce
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) sought to strengthen its genomics training portfolio through better understanding of how to evaluate the outcomes of research trainees from differing backgrounds. As part of its Training, Diversity, and Health Equity (TiDHE) Office’s efforts, NHGRI needed expert support to determine best practices, identify challenges, and create guidance that would be useful across NIH and the broader biomedical community.
Our Goal
Identify evidence-based approaches for evaluating trainee outcomes in genomic research training programs, offering metrics and methodologies that improve program design and empower trainees to succeed across a range of career paths.
Our Path to Success
Ripple Effect conducted interviews, literature reviews, and environmental scans to identify strategies for evaluating outcomes of current and former research trainees. Our team synthesized the findings into a publicly available toolkit and supplemental report designed to support training programs in improving tracking and evaluation methods. This evidence-based resource provides NIH staff, academic institutions, and other organizations with practical tools to assess training impact and support genomic workforce growth.
